Telecom association names Barron 'Legislator of the Year'
Farmers Telecommunications Cooperative General Manager Fred Johnson, presented the Legislator of the Year award to Sen. Lowell Barron on behalf of the Alabama-Mississippi Telecommunications Association.

The Alabama-Mississippi Telecommunications Association (AMTA) honored State Senator Lowell Barron in October as its Legislator of the Year. Farmers Telecommunications Cooperative General Manager Fred Johnson presented the award during the association's annual convention.

The AMTA recognized Barron for his work in the 2009 legislative session to fight an amendment that would have resulted in rate hikes for residents of many rural areas. The amendment appeared headed for quick passage until Barron intervened on the Senate floor, promising to fight the bill unless language was inserted that would protect rural rates.

In the face of fierce opposition from Barron, who is Chairman of the Senate Rules Committee, agreement was quickly reached to protect the people of Alabama from rate hikes.

"We appreciate Senator Barron and his dedication to rural telephony," says FTC's Johnson, "and to the citizens of rural Alabama."
