| Welcome to Mr. Hemphill’s class at the DeKalb County Technology Center. Today’s assignment is...a grilled cheese sandwich?
That might sound a little odd in an ordinary classroom, but in this particular place, ordinary is just not on the menu.
The classroom is part of a program called ‘Challenges’ created and implemented almost 15 years ago in DeKalb County. |

| It was not really a party, and the friend who invited him was not really a friend. It was more like a casual gathering with some people he barely knew. In the end, he found out the free powder they gave him was not exactly free, either. It came with a heavy price. With just one try, Jason Wells unknowingly plunged himself into a nightmare of hellish proportions that would last eight horrifying years, and cost him everything he had, everything he loved, and everything he was. |

| Most counties benefit from an organized economic development authority, staffed by professionals who are trained and experienced in the practice of economic development. However, the process of improving communities calls for the involvement of everyone who participates in the local economy.
“The economic development authorities in DeKalb and Jackson counties do a fine job,” says Fred Johnson, General Manager and Executive Vice President of Farmers Telecommunications Cooperative (FTC). “But building our communities is something we all have a responsibility to take part in.” |

| His name was Joel. He was a friend of mine at college - not one of my closest but definitely a friend. The one thing I remember most about him was that he was a genuinely nice guy – one of those people who never seemed to have a bad attitude. One morning as I walked across campus I met Joel on the sidewalk. “How are you doing?” I asked. “I’m good” he said. “I’m headed to see the Dean [of students]. He wants to see me for some reason.” We said our goodbyes and each of us headed our respective ways. A short while later I learned from the Dean that the reason he needed to see Joel was to break the news to him that his father had just died from a completely unexpected heart attack. |
